Miles Raymond is a not particularly social introvert and middle school English teacher who dreams of a literary career. Jack Cole is an actor who, after his great years on television, plays in commercials and is getting ready for the wedding.

Miles and Jack are friends going through a midlife crisis and planning a tour of California's vineyards together before they get married. During the trip, they will drink more than one glass of wine and meet women who will affect their lives. The plot of "Bezdroży" can give the impression that it is an average road movie based on predictable characters and crude humor. Nothing could be more wrong, because we are dealing with one of the most interesting contemporary American productions of recent years. The first thing that makes a movie so strong is the script. Its originality is evidenced by the fact that it would be difficult to define the genre of the film, because it contains elements of road cinema, comedy and drama. Nevertheless, the whole is very well balanced and the drama experienced by the heroes more than once makes the viewer enjoy watching comic scenes with even greater pleasure. These, however, do not disturb the sense of the dramaturgy of the situation, thanks to the fact that the humor is rather unusual and subtle. The comedy here is mainly due to the contrast of different characters and the absurd situations in which they find themselves. The story told in the film is closed during the week of the heroes' lives, so the plot has an episodic structure.

Each day has been highlighted, so you can clearly see the evolution of the heroes. It is difficult to say whether the strength of the script lies in the source material (i.e. the book by Rex Pickett of the same title) or in its neat adaptation by screenwriters Jim Taylor and Alexander Payne (known from films such as "Schmidt" with the sensational Jack Nicholson ). It does not change the fact that the script is well written.

However, the script itself would be nothing without actors who can use its potential. Fortunately, thanks to a great casting, you don't have to worry about it. The character we spend the most time with is Miles, played by Paul Giamatti ("American Splendor"). His exterior perfectly matches the character he plays, and he, through his natural acting, makes it easy for the viewer to empathize with his situation. Whereas Jack (Thomas Haden Church known from the series "Wings") is the opposite of Miles. He is an outgoing, talkative playboy, experienced in seducing women (the fact that he is similar to Arnold Schwarzenegger, of course, without an accent and specific acting adds to his charm). Jack and Miles face various problems that are universal (such as leaving a legacy, reaching emotional maturity), so we intuitively identify with both characters. It is also worth mentioning the cute pictures of California and the warm colors of the film. An interesting procedure, although not abused, is to place several images on the screen at the same time, thanks to which we can observe different shots.

The music in the film is a nice instrumental jazz that was nominated for a Golden Globe. To sum up, the film is highly recommendable to anyone who likes to laugh and at the same time does not shy away from melancholy and reflection. The film resembles Jason Reitman's films, so it is a must read for fans of this director and fans of original genre mixes.
