EDIT : This is also how I host my Bukkit servers that me and my friends have been hosting until I get the steps for portforwarding down. Or until I have enough money to buy one.

Step 1: Server Software. This step is completely yours. What you want to do is download your server software, it could be Bukkit, the minecraft server software from minecraft.net, or some other software I don't even know about! You can download it like you would normally, launch it, and then stop the server when it has all the files in that folder. Another option is to create a LAN Server. And yes, you can use this to let other people connect to your world with a client that I'm going to talk about in a second. Create a new world with all the settings you desire, then open it to LAN. A server!

Step 2: The Evolve Client: This is the client I'm talking about. MINECRAFT CRAFTING Evolve. This is a client for you and your friends to host parties, chat with people, and find other servers. The VPN is the main feature of this client. It's a bit like hamachi but in the form of an Xbox Live Party. You can use a mic or headset and chat or just chat with your keyboard. Sign up at Evolve Home Page (opens a new window) and then download the client. This client can also be used to host other games, such as Terraria and Steam Games. It can also work with PSP games that support Adhoc mode. Monster Hunter 3 Portable is one example.

Step 3 - Getting your friends: After you have installed Evolve on your computer, sign in to the client. Then, start inviting friends to download the client. Once that's taken care of, go to the Friend window and select the dropdown bar and click "Create Party". Once that's done go into the party, invite friends, and choose the game. (Minecraft, in this case)

Final Step: Server Time Once everything is done, you can start the server.
