Casinos have been a huge business across the United States for the last two decades. Casino gaming was only legalized in the United State until the 1980s. Since then, over 30 states have legalized gambling in casinos.

The result of increased gambling at casinos is an increase in people who are conditioned to believe that they're under the "gambling curse." Gambling leads to addiction to alcohol and drugs family break-ups, as well as an overall decline in educational levels. Gambling can lead to an excessive amount of spending and living above the limit of what one can afford. These are two conditions that are detrimental to society. And these social costs aren't only confined to those who are forced to engage in drinking or using drugs, nor to families of those who are not educated. The social impact of gambling to society are measured through the rise in the tax base required to pay for social programs, like those that aid people with mental disabilities as well as the less fortunate.

What does this mean for you? On the one hand, it is possible to say that by making sure that Las Vegas and Atlantic City (both of which have extremely high rates of crime and, consequently, very high cost of health care) open, we are trying to reduce the negative impacts of financial deterioration and crime. While casinos may add value to communities (and experts agree that they can), there are limits to the value casinos that are value-added can bring. In this instance the perceived value of gambling may not provide any value in the first place.

However it appears that if we decide to shut down these casinos, we would also reduce the opportunities to develop economic growth in these regions. Even if the casinos were not shut down, this remains true. Simply put, the casino revenue generates income for the local economy. And when the casino closes the casino, those income streams are cut or even disappear completely.

If we choose to close down gambling venues will this have long-term positive effects on the society? If we don't do something and then we are permitting it to take place? One might reasonably ask the question: Have we become so enthralled in the mindset of a casino that we're not seeing the long-term benefits that can be derived from this kind of entertainment and event-based revenue stream? If we don't permit this to happen, what are the reasons?

Or, more specifically, do we allow the casino owners and players to get an exemption simply because they are richer than we do? Do we really care about earning money? Are we just providing jobs for the labor force which is desperately needed in this country? What about the expected positive return from gambling ever going to be realized? If we don't solve this issue, what will be the real cost?

There are numerous solutions to these questions. First, I don't see any casino proprietor or executive who can clearly see the future of their business once they are gone. They seldom, if ever get involved in the market in any way.
